Op.cit: A Journal of Anglo-American Studies
(the Journal of APEAA – Associação Portuguesa de Estudos Anglo-Americanos,
the Portuguese Association for Anglo-American Studies) is now calling
for papers for its next miscellaneous issue.
Proposals for contributions – POSITION PAPERS (2,000 to 4,000 words) and
FULL PAPERS (7,000 to 8,000 words) – to be sent by 13 April 2009

a peer-reviewed journal all contributions are sent out anonymously to

as adopted by Op.cit style sheet.
We also welcome brief ABSTRACTS of MA and PhD
dissertations that have been submitted to public discussion in Portugal
from 2007 to the present. Abstracts in English and Portuguese should not
exceed one page (c. 300 words) in each language.
REVIEWS of recent books or essays, as well as NOTES and NOTICES about
Journals are also welcome.

The
10th ESSE conference
will be held at the University of Turin from 24 to 28 August, 2010.
We invite papers for a
series of 3 seminars on
The Enemy Within:
Cultures of Terror in South
Asian Literature and Film
The seminars will explore contemporary ethnic, religious and gendered
violence in South Asia, a theme that is all the more relevant in the
aftermath of 9/11, the terrorist attacks in Bali and Mumbai and on the
20th anniversary of Ayatollah Khomeini's 'fatwa' on Salman Rushdie. The
panel discussions will invite speakers to think beyond predominant
vocabularies of political violence and the clash of civilisations in
the wake of the US-led "war on terror". For such vocabularies are not
only reactionary and objectionable, but they are also inadequate to
address the complex and multiple histories of colonialism, secularism,
nationalism, ethnicity and religion that underpin violence in South
Asia.
South Asia has had a long history of violence and conflict, which
demands a critical reassessment of the dominant discourse on terrorism:
revolutionary anti-colonialist movements, post-colonial secessionist
uprisings, religious fundamentalism, gender conflicts, caste wars,
'racial' strife, ethnic struggles, regional conflicts, and terrorism.
We invite
papers based on novels and films dealing with the following key
topics:
-- Martyrdom,
Terrorism and suicide bombings: representations of violence
and self-sacrifice in south Asian fiction and film
-- Jihad, Religious fundamentalism, Islamophobia, Sectarianism
-- State of
emergency, State terrorism, Institutional terror and torture
-- Divisions of territory and the self: representations of partition in
South Asian fiction and film
-- Nationalism (Hindutva,
Sinhala, Tamil...), Civil War, Intifada, Refugees
-- Exclusion, Resistance to post-colonial order, imperialism and
globalization, Revolution (Naxalism, Dalit literature)
-- Oppositional
cinema as a tool for resistance and social mobilization
Papers should be roughly
20-minutes long, and they will be arranged into panel sessions on
related topics by the convenors. A selection of the papers presented at
ESSE will be published in a scholarly journal and in a refereed volume.

This
year, SHAKE-SPEARES SONNETS Neuer before Imprinted (1609), the
most successful volume of poetry next to King David’s Psalms,
have been with us four centuries. The initial impact of this modest and
enigmatic quarto and its 154 sonnets was not overwhelming and also for
the following almost two centuries Shakespeare’s sonnets slept in the
limbo of cultural forgetfulness. But then, towards the end of the
eighteenth century, they began to explode on the world with an
extraordinary sleeper effect, the shockwaves reaching out from England
to the Continent and from Europe on to the rest of the world. Now, after
another two centuries, it is time to celebrate this extraordinary
canonical career. It is time to build a global monument to remind the
world of this quatercentenary and to celebrate the power of these
sonnets to move their readers across the centuries and continents, in
states unborn and accents yet unknown.
Following Shakespeare’s own instructions, a book shall be this monument
– a mighty tome, an anthology of translations of his sonnets quite
literally “from China to Peru”. For this, Jürgen Gutsch and Manfred
Pfister, the only begetters of this project, have assembled a team of
more than seventy contributors from all over the world to report on the
fortunes of Shakespeare’s sonnets and their cultural presence in all the
major and many of the minor languages of the world. There are expert
introductions in English to all the languages and cultures in their
dialogues with the sonnets, but at the core are the translations
themselves, each in its original script, be that Amharic or Cyrillic.
The
book aims at shedding some light on the role of translation as “medial
transposition” rather than close literal rendering of a source text in a
target language as was the ideal of the 19th century.
Translation is now mostly considered an art in its own right, creating
texts that are more than a surrogate for the original in the source
language. The poetical means and the specific discourses of the original
trigger, but do not dominate, the poem in translation, and undergo a
metamorphosis, at its best, a sea-change into something rich and
strange.
The
anthology casts a wide net not only in the global range of languages but
also in its broad notion of translation, which goes beyond verbal
translation from one language into the other and comprises settings to
music as well as performances or visual art work stimulated by the
sonnets. Therefore, it will include a multimedial archive on CD (or DVD)
offering readings by native speakers of all the translations and a
choice of musical settings and illustrations and other images. In all
this, it demonstrates a particular interest in what is marginal and
non-canonical; it does not disregard what is beyond or beneath the
official languages – dialect, for instance, or other vernacular
varieties, artificial or sign language – nor shy back from the wilder
shores of palinode, parody, deconstruction, meaning-bending
appropriation and other forms of ‘radical translation’ beyond the fringe
of philological faithfulness to, and respect for, the great classic of
world literature Shakespeare’s Sonnets have become.

The Perils
of Print Culture
A
conference to be held at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland,
10-12
September 2010
Over the past twenty years the study of print culture has become
prominent in the disciplines of history, literary studies and languages.
The study
of print culture has many advantages, but there is a growing sense among
advanced practitioners that scholars need to fine-tune or calibrate
their understanding of this burgeoning field of enquiry.
Papers presented at this conference will encourage scholars to think
more systematically about the conceptual, methodological and
technological problems associated with the study of print culture. They
will encompass a wide range of chronological periods, geographical
locations and genres of print.

According to American poet and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Thought
is the blossom; language the bud; and action the fruit behind it.”
Without language in all of its forms—oral, written, visual, and
symbolic—there would be no way to translate thoughts into political
action or personal expression. In many branches of American Studies,
language itself has become a form of art—the vehicle through which
those in the mainstream and in the margins have communicated their
histories, cultures and visions of the future. Socially-constructed
and thus almost always political in nature, language not only allows
individuals to develop an understanding of their environment(s), but
also permits them to engage in the shaping of their own landscapes.
Language is thus intrinsic to the expression of culture. Not only
does it convey values, beliefs and customs, but it also has an
important social function in that it fosters sentiments of collective
identity and solidarity. It is the means through which culture and
its traditions are preserved and transferred from generation to
generation. Consequently, as languages disappear, cultures, and their
numerous layers of representation, also wither away and die, for gone
are the mechanisms that translate thought into experience.
Conversely, language also has the power to produce and unite, serving
as the currency for cross-cultural exchange, the adaptation of new
rites and rituals, and the transformation of individuals into global
citizens.
The American Studies Association of Turkey invites proposals that
consider the art of language as a cultural expression, broadly
conceived. We particularly encourage abstracts which incorporate
transdisciplinary explorations of the subject, and welcome submissions
from any branch of American Studies. Possible themes include, but are
not limited to:
• Music as a language of cultural expression
• Indigenous languages and cultures/language revitalization
• Multilingualism/multiculturalism
• The politics of language and culture
• Trans or intercultural languages
• English as the global language/“American” as the global culture?
• Cultural expression in speech behavior
• Cultural outcomes/products of language (hybridity, creolization,
metissage, mestizaje)
• The manipulation of language for cultural/political purposes
• Race, language and culture
• Semiotics/semantics/sign language
• Visual language/visual culture/aesthetics
• The visual word (comic books/graphic novels/political cartoons)
• Art, language and culture
• Literature and cultural expression
• Food and clothing as cultural expressions
• Ecolinguistics
• Performance as a language of cultural expression
• Oral traditions (griots, storytelling, folktales, street poetry)

• Domestic arts (quilting, weaving, pottery, and needlework) as

The time allowance for all presentations is 20 minutes. An additional
10 minutes will be provided for discussion.
Proposals for papers, panels, performances, exhibits, and other modes

English, as well as a 1–2 paragraph biographical description for each
participant.

Dear Colleagues,
I'm seeking scholars interested in contributing to the forthcoming
Encyclopedia of Elizabethan England. This work will be published by
ABC-CLIO, the leading academic reference publishing company.
This multi-volume reference work is aimed at advanced secondary school
or undergraduate audiences covering subjects important to the English
experience from the accession of Elizabeth to the death of William
Shakespeare. Entries will also touch on broader elements of British
culture and the early modern world as appropriate. The finished
encyclopedia will include overview essays and select primary documents
along with entries reflecting a range of important topics for the era.
Entries are still unassigned for many individuals, texts, events,
institutions and cultural movements from a wide-ranging list.
Scholars with an interest in early modern English literature, culture

-- with a brief description of their research interests and relevant
qualifications to receive a list of available related topics. Graduate
students who are working in the area are also welcome to contribute as
authors.
All contributors to the Encyclopedia receive author credits and access

words or more also receive a minimum credit of $300 toward the purchase
of any ABC-CLIO print or e-book publication, including the Encyclopedia.
