Around 1478, the Danish authorities closed the fishing banks of Iceland that they controled to foreigners. [. . .] Under the circumstances, there were two solutions for the fishermen who had been deprived of those fishing banks: look for others further South, or try to find other territories in the North Atlantic not controlled by the Danes.

The expansion of fishing zones resulted in the immediate discovery of Newfoundland [. . .] and Portugal, who had a powerful Navy, organized successfully the first expeditions to the 'land of the cod', which immediately attracted the attention of the remaining European powers. . .

The Creoula,a four-mast lugger built in Lisbon, in 1937, which took part in dozens of campaigns in Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Greenland.

It is currently at the service of  the Portuguese Navy as a "sea training ship".
